Under a disorder potential interacting closed quantum systems can display many-body localized phase and fail to thermalize.

In real systems, however, the complete isolation from the environment is impossible, and thus theoretical questions regarding the stability of many-body localization (MBL) has been recently raised.

In particular, the effect of MBL to a finite thermal bath having few degree of freedom is essential to understand the phase transition.

In this talk, I will introduce a systematic study of stability of MBL using ultracold atoms in two-dimensional optical lattice. In contrast our general belief that a quantum state is fragile against the coupling to a incoherent thermal bath, we observe a coexistence of the two contrasting phases. This results can be qualitatively understood by a recently developed theory of MBL phase transition near the critical disorder.
