Résumé :
We report an experimental study of the relaxation dynamics of a coherently split one-dimensional Bose gas through measurements of full probability distributions of matter-wave interference patterns, which provides us with unprecedented information about the dynamical states of the system.
Following an initial rapid evolution, the distributions approach an apparent thermal-like steady state characterized by an effective temperature eight times lower than the initial equilibrium temperature of the system before the splitting process.
This dynamical phenomenon is the first demonstration of the existence of pre-thermalization, showing that the evolution of non-equilibrium many-body quantum systems is a far richer process than has been assumed in the past.
