Heating and « cooling » an all-optical BEC

Abstract :
In my talk I will address a number of experiments with an ’all-optical’ BEC of rubidium atoms. One involves a variation on the ’delta kicked rotor’, in which we reverse the quantum chaotical behaviour in this system and restore a velocity subclass of the atoms to their initial state, hence ’cooling’ the atoms. In another experiment, we apply a carefully measured amount of heat to the condensate, and measure the final temperature.
